Song Joong-ki’s Reaction to Fan Mentioning Ex-Wife Song Hye-kyo Draws Attention

Actor Song Joong-ki has drawn attention after a fan mentioned his ex-wife Song Hye-kyo during an overseas street encounter.

A video circulating on social media shows Song Joong-ki casually greeting fans while dressed in a baseball cap, sweatshirt and jeans.

During the interaction, a Chinese-speaking fan mentioned Song Hye-kyo’s name. Song Joong-ki briefly changed his expression before quickly returning to a smile and continuing to greet those around him.

The moment subsequently drew discussion online, with many commenters criticizing the decision to bring up his former spouse during an otherwise casual fan encounter.

Others also questioned the media attention surrounding the brief exchange, arguing that turning a momentary facial reaction into a news story unnecessarily revived discussion of the actors’ private lives.

Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo became a couple after starring together in the 2016 KBS2 drama Descendants of the Sun. They married in October 2017 and later divorced.

Song Joong-ki remarried former actress Katy Louise Saunders in 2023. The couple has a son and a daughter.

Netizen Reactions

The sampled Nate News comments were largely critical of the fan for mentioning Song Hye-kyo, but several were equally critical of the media for turning the brief exchange into a story.

1. I’m f*cking curious about what made them divorce after only about two years of marriage.
2. He’s remarried now and living well... and you ask him about his ex-wife? That’s just rude...
3. He remarried someone else, has kids and is living his life, so why bring up his ex-wife ㅋㅎ What the hell is going through people’s heads...???
4. If they’re both living their own lives well, just leave them alone... Because they’re public figures, people are always talking about their private lives... Marriage, divorce, remarriage or staying single—it’s all their own choice... Everyone should just live however they want ^^
5. And this is supposed to be an article... The reporter is even worse than the person who brought her up.
6. The reporter is pretty awful too. Writing articles like this just gives malicious commenters something to pile onto.......
7. The rude question was already the problem, but the reporter turning it into an article is rude too ㅉㅉㅉ I’m so sick of these gossip articles.
8. The question was rude, and the reporter turning this into an article is rude too.
9. To think we even have to read articles about stuff like this... Of course his expression wasn’t going to look happy.
10. That’s a completely natural reaction. If someone meeting me for the first time asked who I was and the person beside them said something like, “Oh, that person’s ex-girlfriend” or “ex-boyfriend,” I’d probably react too. If it’s your ex-wife, ugh, of course you’d frown.
