Lee Seung-gi Clarifies Comments About Searching for Cheaper Gas Stations After Marriage

Singer and actor Lee Seung-gi has clarified earlier comments about searching for cheaper gas stations after marriage after the remarks drew attention online.

During a video uploaded to his YouTube channel Lee Seung-gi 2 on October 15, Lee reacted to the media coverage surrounding comments he made in a previous video about becoming more conscious of gas prices.

Lee had explained that he enjoys driving when he wants time to himself but usually does not travel very far because longer drives cost more in fuel and can be tiring.

He also said his refueling habits changed after getting married. While he previously went to whichever gas station was closest, he now checks prices first and tries to avoid particularly expensive stations.

Some reports contrasted the comments with estimates of Lee’s wealth, while some online users questioned why someone reported to be wealthy would pay close attention to gas prices.

Addressing the reaction, Lee joked, “Why are there so many articles about gas prices?”

He said an acquaintance had also teased him by asking whether driving far in search of cheaper gas would end up costing more in fuel than he saved.

Lee clarified that he does not travel extreme distances to find lower prices. He said he typically uses a gas station near Hannam Bridge in Sinsa-dong when its prices are reasonable, or at most travels to a station in Yeoksam-dong.

He added that it was difficult to personally explain every detail behind the reports surrounding his comments.

Netizen Reactions

The sampled Nate News comments were sharply divided: several users expressed broader dislike toward Lee Seung-gi, while others defended his right to be frugal regardless of his wealth.

1. He gets more unlikable as time goes on.
2. I seriously can’t stand looking at him.
3. He just gets more unlikable over time.
4. Did his whole vibe change or something...
5. Having a lot of money and having frugal habits are two separate things. There are plenty of people worth hundreds of billions of won who live like that too.
6. His whole look has changed. You’re not the person you used to be. Just stay out of the spotlight and live your life. Don’t keep putting yourself out there until people actually want to see you again. Instead of lying low, he keeps going in the wrong direction, which is why he gets criticized even more. Just go back to how you were in the beginning.
7. I just dislike Lee Seung-gi himself. He’d probably rank among the top three most disliked celebrities in Korea! I just don’t like him!!
8. Isn’t it stranger to deliberately go somewhere expensive just because you have money? If you’re wealthy, there’s nothing wrong with saving on small things too... It’s natural to save when you don’t have much money, so why suddenly shouldn’t you save when you do? I don’t understand what’s supposed to be strange about that...
9. Is it wrong for rich people to save money? Even things that shouldn’t be controversies are becoming controversies ã…‹
10. Why do people care so much about how much money someone else has or how they spend it? Worry about your own lives instead of leaving comments like this.
