Independent PD Yoon Jae-wan Draws Attention for High-Risk Reporting Around the World

A Korean online community post highlighting independent PD Yoon Jae-wan’s years of reporting from war zones, areas controlled by armed groups and other dangerous locations has drawn attention online.

The viral post compiled scenes from several of Yoon’s assignments, including reporting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ukraine, Haiti, Myanmar and parts of Latin America.

One of his best-known assignments came during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Yoon spent 68 days in the country documenting the war for KBS, filming amid repeated shelling and following civilians as they fled affected areas. The resulting KBS special later reached the finals of the international Rose d’Or awards in the news and current affairs category.

Yoon has also reported extensively from Haiti. In 2024, KBS credited him with securing the first exclusive interview by a Korean media outlet with Jimmy ChĂ©rizier, the powerful Haitian gang leader widely known as “Barbecue,” while reporting from gang-controlled Port-au-Prince.

His other assignments have taken him into similarly difficult environments. KBS later sent Yoon to Kayin State, also known as Karen State, during Myanmar’s civil war, where he reported on armed resistance groups and captured government soldiers.

The post also highlighted footage of Yoon reporting from areas affected by civil conflict, organized crime, drug trafficking, severe pollution and extreme poverty. The post stated that he previously served in the South Korean Navy’s SSU rescue unit, an aspect of his background that commenters connected to his apparent physical endurance in the field.

The collection prompted hundreds of reactions, with users expressing disbelief at the situations Yoon has entered while praising both his stamina and his ability to gain access to people operating in dangerous environments.

Several commenters also pointed out that the camera operators and other crew members accompanying him face many of the same risks.
