A preview shown at the end of the October 3 episode of MBC’s variety show The Manager (also known as Omniscient Interfering View) featured Hwang visiting a hair salon before his retirement ceremony. During an earlier appearance on the program, he had been teased over his long hairstyle, which viewers compared to the look associated with the historical drama The Slave Hunters (also known as Chuno).
Hwang previously explained that he had always kept his hair short while playing professional baseball and wanted to try growing it out after retiring. Ahead of the retirement ceremony, however, he cut off the long hair he had been growing and opted for a neater look for fans.
The preview also showed Hwang preparing to step onto the field as a player for the final time. When his manager remarked that he appeared not to have slept much, Hwang revealed that he had only slept for two hours because he could not fall asleep.
Hwang retired from professional baseball and later drew attention after losing 18 kilograms. According to the report, he reduced his body fat mass to 3.2 kilograms and his body fat percentage to 3.9%.
Hwang married T-ara member Ji-yeon in 2022. The two later agreed to divorce following a period of separation, with their divorce mediation finalized on November 21, 2024.
Netizen Reactions
The sampled comments were largely critical, although much of the criticism was directed at the article’s framing and Hwang’s continued television appearances rather than his haircut itself. Several commenters objected to identifying him primarily as “Ji-yeon’s ex-husband,” while others criticized his appearance following his weight loss. A few users responded positively to his looks and career accomplishments.
1. Did you really have to use the wording “Ji-yeon’s ex-husband,” reporter Seo Yu-na? This is seriously such trashy journalism.
2. It kind of feels like he thinks he’s really handsome ;;
3. Is his biggest achievement being Ji-yeon’s ex-husband?
4. A greasy-looking Moai statue.
5. He lost weight so quickly that his face is sagging. He actually looked more vibrant when he had some weight on him, but now he looks lifeless and about 10 years older.
6. Is his name “Ji-yeon’s ex-husband”? They’re strangers now, so why do they always attach an ex-spouse’s name whenever a celebrity gets divorced?
7. All this supply with zero demand... so exhausting.
8. He’s handsome! And tall!! Definitely the type women would like.
9. He has a great body, succeeded in his field, and seems cool.
10. Why does he keep showing up? I can’t stand looking at him. Gather the fans who like you and do YouTube or something—just stop appearing on TV.
