Claims Linking Cornell Lawsuit Defendant Winston Lee to Former Korean Prime Minister’s Family Draw Attention

Online claims about the family background of Winston Lee, one of seven men named as defendants in a civil lawsuit involving an alleged sexual assault at Cornell University, are drawing attention among Korean and international social media users.

The lawsuit, filed by a former Cornell student identified as Jane Doe, names Lee and six other former or current members of the university’s Chi Phi fraternity. The plaintiff alleges that she was drugged and sexually assaulted at the fraternity house in October 2024. The allegations remain unresolved in court, and the defendants have not been criminally convicted in connection with the case.

The case has received renewed attention after prosecutors reopened the criminal investigation. On October 1, New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed the office of Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to take over the investigation, citing concerns surrounding the handling of the original case.

Meanwhile, social media posts circulating in Korea and overseas have claimed that Winston Lee is the grandson of former South Korean Prime Minister Lee Hong-koo. The posts have also identified his alleged parents as Lee Hyun-woo, an executive with EIG in Asia, and Hwang Ji-young, president of the Hong Kong Korean Women’s Association.

There is some publicly documented overlap with those claims: reports published following Lee Hong-koo’s death identified his son Lee Hyun-woo as EIG’s Asia representative and his daughter-in-law Hwang Ji-young as president of the Hong Kong Korean Women’s Association. However, those reports did not identify Lee Hong-koo’s grandchildren, and Winston Lee’s alleged family connection has not been independently confirmed.
