Chinese actor Zhang Ming’en has responded after footage showing him being hit by his girlfriend during an argument on the street drew attention online.
Following the spread of the footage, Zhang posted a statement explaining that the disagreement began because he had taken unflattering photos of his girlfriend and refused to admit that the pictures were bad.
Zhang also addressed online claims that his girlfriend had knelt in front of him during the dispute. He denied that interpretation, saying that when he tried to go home, she sat on the ground while acting cute and refusing to let the matter go.
Regarding footage showing her hitting him, Zhang jokingly said that he had been stubborn and “deserved to be hit.” He went on to remark that taking good photos of a girlfriend seemed to be a lifelong challenge for men and said he would work on improving his photography skills.
Zhang separately apologized for illegally parking and for causing a disturbance in a public place.
The footage nevertheless drew criticism, where many commenters objected to treating the incident as humorous and described the behavior shown in the video as dating violence.
Netizen Reactions
The sampled comments were overwhelmingly critical of the violence shown in the footage. Many commenters questioned why the incident was being treated humorously because the person being hit was a man, while others argued that the stated reason for the argument did not make the physical behavior acceptable.
