Actor Kim Min Reveals Generator-Powered 1938 Home on I Live Alone

Actor Kim Min gave viewers a look at his unconventional daily life and nearly 90-year-old home during the October 2 episode of MBC’s I Live Alone.

During his first appearance on the program, Kian84 said he had initially seen Kim Min in Casino and thought he was a foreign actor. Kim Min jokingly responded that he had come on the show to let people know that he is Korean.

Kim Min, who said he has lived alone for 28 years, currently stays in an old house belonging to an older acquaintance whose family has long been close with his own. The house had gone unused for years and is around 80 to 90 years old. He surprised the cast by securing the door with wire before starting a generator that gradually powered the lights inside.

His unusual bedroom was inspired by a period when he lived out of a van while overseas. Kim Min said he would place a mattress across the back seats and cover the windows with fabric, and wanted to recreate the feeling he enjoyed while traveling. He spent a total of eight years abroad, including a year and a half in the United Kingdom, five years in New Zealand and a year and a half in Australia. He was born in Dongducheon and said his family has lived there since his grandfather’s generation.

The home also includes a colorful wardrobe resembling a vintage shop, while limited electrical power causes the lights to flicker when he showers. Discussing his lifestyle, Kim Min said, “I think life is happier when it lacks a little. Isn’t it fun?”

Kim Min also showed himself repairing the house by applying cement. He explained that the home was built in 1938 and that he gradually repairs it himself. His father worked as a plasterer throughout his life, while Kim Min’s first part-time job in high school involved carrying mortar containers at construction sites.

Later, Jun Hyun-moo joked that Kim Min’s home was impossible to associate with any one country as he ate a baguette in a traditional-style room with a photograph of actress Shim Eun-ha hanging on the wall.

Netizen Reactions

The sampled comments were largely enthusiastic, with viewers praising Kim Min’s unconventional lifestyle and saying his appearance brought back some of the novelty associated with earlier episodes of I Live Alone. A few commenters questioned whether parts of the lifestyle shown on television were staged.

1. This was seriously one for the ages ă…‹ă…‹
2. I’ve seen plenty of people pretending to live the off grid lifestyle, but this is genuinely my first time seeing someone fire up a generator ă…Žă…Ž
3. Seriously ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ What did I just watch? ă…‹ă…‹ You could show us exactly this every week and I still wouldn’t get tired of it, so please make him a regular cast member ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹
4. It really doesn’t feel staged because every little movement he makes is so natural and effortless ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ Looking at not just his house but the life he’s lived, he talks about everything so casually, but every one of those things takes real courage to actually do. I’m honestly jealous of people with that kind of personality.
5. For real, he was f*cking cool.
6. Pasin... First I was surprised to find out he’s Korean, and then I was surprised again by how genuinely he really lives alone~
7. I was getting so sick of everyone showing off, so it’s nice to finally see an unpretentious life again... The others need to cut out the pretentious stuff and learn from him...
8. Take “Fake Hyun-moo” off and make Kim Min a regular.
9. You already got fooled by Jun Hyun-moo’s fake act and you’re falling for it again,,,, This is totally staged.
10. I’m getting that same fresh, novel feeling from him that I got back when Kim Banjang appeared on I Live Alone ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹ă…‹
