Suzy Says She Was Told Her Face Was “Ordinary and Plain,” Making It Easy for Viewers to Project the Characters’ Emotions Onto Her

In a recent interview, Suzy reflected on the range of characters she has played, from Yang Seo-yeon in Architecture 101 and Lee Yu-mi in Anna to Lee Doona in Doona! and Ki Ka-young in Genie, Make a Wish.

Suzy said she once did not understand why people looked at her and thought of a “first love.” Her perspective changed after someone told her that her face was relatively ordinary and plain, making it easy for viewers to project a character’s emotions onto her.

“That made me think, ‘I guess my face can hold many different characters,’” she said. Suzy added that as time passes, she sometimes discovers expressions and sides of her face that she had never noticed before. She said those moments make her happy because they remind her that there are still faces within her that even she has yet to discover.

Netizen Reactions

Many of the sampled TheQoo commenters reacted with disbelief and humor at the idea of describing Suzy as “ordinary” or “plain,” while others said they understood the point being made about the versatility of her appearance.

1. Why is the bar for "ordinary" so high?
2. What is she even saying right now? I seriously want to go up to her and spend an hour telling her how pretty she is. Ordinary and plain?? What kind of nonsense is that? Her eyes are pretty, her nose is pretty, her mouth is pretty—everything is pretty. Seriously, look in the mirror. She's beautiful, elegant, and graceful all at once.
3. Suzy... even objectively speaking, you're definitely not plain ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
4. She's definitely not ordinary, but I get what they mean ㅋㅋㅋOn screen she has this pure and demure image, but apparently her features are so striking in person that people almost don't recognize her.
6. The fact that she can be everyone’s “first love” already means she has fantasy-like looks, so who... gaslit Suzy with this nonsense? It kind of annoys me how women with that innocent beauty always get described as “plain.”
7. Who said that? Saying something that ridiculous to Suzy... I seriously can’t believe it. It’s got me commenting like some Line 1 lunatic.
8. Suzy just chose to take it positively, but telling a celebrity who’s practically synonymous with being pretty that she looks ordinary and plain...?
9. But in a good way, I think it means she can blend into almost any kind of role. Even when she plays an ordinary or poor character, you can still get immersed, and despite having such striking features, she somehow pulls everything off. She really does have a blank canvas kind of face.
10. This is the most absurd thing I've heard all year.
