Actress Nana has responded to criticism surrounding her appearance in the Netflix historical drama Scandal.
Nana spoke through a fan communication platform on September 22 about reactions to her appearance in the series. Set during the Joseon Dynasty, Scandal features Nana as Hui-yeon, a widow who lost her husband at a young age and has remained devoted to his memory for many years.
Following the drama’s release, some viewers said Nana’s fuller-looking lips drew their attention and made it difficult to become immersed in the historical setting.
Addressing the criticism, Nana said, “If my lips made viewers uncomfortable, that is my fault.” She continued, “I think my personal choice was not the right choice for me as an actress.”
Nana also said she felt sorry for her fans, explaining that people who care about her would be hurt by seeing harsh criticism directed at her. She added that she would work to receive better responses in the future.
Scandal is based on the 2003 film Untold Scandal. The role of Hui-yeon, played by Nana in the series, was portrayed by Jeon Do-yeon in the original film.
Netizen Reactions
The sampled comments were largely critical of Nana’s casting and styling in the historical drama, although some users responded positively to her willingness to address the criticism directly.
1. It’s not just the filler. Her eyebrows and facial features just look too modern for a sageuk. She looks like she’d be the only one walking around with an iPhone.
2. Still, it’s nice to see her acknowledge it honestly.
3. It’s the director’s fault for casting Nana in Jeon Do-yeon’s role ㅉㅉ What were they thinking? Do they really have such poor judgment?
4. She looked like a foreign daughter-in-law... Her acting wasn’t that great either... But it wasn’t just Nana. Son Ye-jin and Ji Chang-wook didn’t really suit it that well either.
5. The director really has an unusual eye. It’s a cast where nobody seems to fit the movie. Son Ye-jin as a femme fatale? Nana as a devoted, virtuous widow? Did they even watch the original?
6. It completely ruins the immersion and makes it hard to watch. The director must have known this too, so why did they cast her?
7. Soyou, the “lip filler legend,” never admitted it to the end, so at least Nana is better for acknowledging it.
8. I don’t think historical dramas suit Nana. Modern dramas suit her, but this feels like a casting mistake. You shouldn’t compare her to Jeon Do-yeon, but there really is a big difference in acting ability.
9. I heard people were saying she looked like a Ukrainian daughter-in-law.
10. Her original lips weren’t even thin—they were just right. Why get filler... I mean, it’s Nana’s choice, but still...
