BLACKPINK member Lisa has drawn criticism in an online discussion over comments she made about restrictions she experienced during her trainee and early idol years under YG Entertainment.
Lisa recently reflected on the rules she faced after joining YG as a teenager, including restrictions on dating, drinking, getting a driver’s license, and going out to meet friends. She compared the environment to attending a boarding school, while also saying that it was “not that bad” and acknowledging that the company may have been trying to protect the trainees because they were young.
Lisa also spoke about having difficulty expressing herself during that period, saying she had lived that way since she was 14.
Her comments prompted discussion on Nate Pann, where the original poster characterized them as criticism of YG, particularly over restrictions on dating and going to clubs during her early career.
A screenshot included in the post showed one commenter arguing that those restrictions were relatively minor compared with other forms of control idols can experience, while another said YG had generally been lenient regarding its artists’ private lives.
The discussion that followed was largely critical of Lisa, with commenters questioning her portrayal of the restrictions and arguing that the rules were part of the trade-offs involved in debuting through a major K-pop agency.
Netizen Reactions
The sampled Nate Pann comments were overwhelmingly critical of Lisa, with users questioning her portrayal of YG’s restrictions and arguing that she benefited substantially from debuting through the K-pop system.
1. She’s gotten too comfortable.
2. Why is she acting like this? Even major European football clubs have managers who ban dating and even phones, with enough authority to make sure nothing interferes with the team. If you gain astronomical amounts of money and fame from that system and then go around criticizing it, people in Europe or the U.S. aren’t going to look at you favorably either. They’ll criticize you behind your back and won’t respect it. Why make yourself look ridiculous? As someone who studied abroad, this is laughable.
3. She criticized her agency for not taking care of her and left, and now she’s saying she hated having to work under restrictions? Sounds like she just wanted all the benefits without any of the inconvenience. Why didn’t she just debut in Thailand then? Though looking at her pre-debut photos, I guess that really was quite the transformation. Korea is such a pushover.
4. Then she could’ve just not done it and lived freely. Why join an agency and then whine because you don’t want to follow its rules?
5. Did she want to create this bizarre image of Korea where rookies aren’t allowed to go clubbing or date? Nobody even cared when she dated, and I’ve never seen anyone criticize her over it. She suffered basically no consequences, so hearing her say things like that makes it feel even stranger.
6. Korean entertainment companies are seriously so obsessed with money that they bring in kids from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia and call it K-pop?? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ If she hadn’t debuted in Korea, would anyone even know who she was? She’d just be one of countless people in Thailand. These companies keep getting stabbed in the back and still never learn.
7. She was restricted for five years and in return made money that ordinary people couldn’t earn even if three generations worked for it, and in the end she turns around and criticizes the system. She’s made enough money to spend however she wants. Whenever Lisa takes a shot at K-pop, there are still plenty of fans defending her, while international fans especially end up attacking K-pop.
8. Honestly, I’ve been a BLACKPINK fan since debut, and seeing that made me feel betrayed. Lisa seemed to have the most freedom out of all the members. Imagine if every little thing she did had become an article like with Jennie or Jisoo. YG debuted her and Korean fans supported her, and this is what she says in return.
9. Southeast Asians shouldn’t be included in K-pop groups. Southeast Asian fans always make an enormous fuss over their member: “Why are you discriminating against our bias? Is it because she’s Southeast Asian?”, “Pay as much attention to her outfits as the other members,” “Don’t put her at the side,” “Don’t interrupt her when she speaks,” “Don’t ignore our bias,” “Why does she look left out?”... They’re worse than the most overbearing helicopter moms.
10. Aren’t Lisa and Jennie supposedly the two members who tried to blow off the 10th anniversary? She should just leave BLACKPINK and never come back to Korea. She can’t let go of K-pop or Korea, but she still wants to criticize them behind the scenes while cashing in on K-pop. Just stay quiet—at least then you won’t make things worse. Her new song practically screams, “I’m a Thai singer,” so don’t come back to Korea anymore. Just live in your own country doing whatever you want.
