[Korean Society] 12층 Debate Over Boyfriend Asking Girlfriend to Throw Away His Trash Sparks Online Discussion

A relationship dilemma discussed on the web variety show 12층 has sparked debate online after the show’s panelists disagreed over whether a girlfriend should regularly throw away her boyfriend’s trash.
The story concerns a couple in their late twenties who have been dating for three months. The boyfriend owns a car and picks his girlfriend up and drops her off for every date, even though she has told him he does not need to. He reportedly says he prefers doing it because it gives him peace of mind, and she says she is grateful for the rides.

Recently, however, the boyfriend began handing her trash such as coffee cups and empty water bottles that he had used before their dates and asking her to throw them away on her way home. What began as an occasional request eventually became something he asked her to do after nearly every date, leading to an argument.

The girlfriend argued that he should throw away his own trash, while the boyfriend pointed out that he regularly picks her up and drives her home and asked why she could not show consideration for him in return. She responded that she never asked him to drive her and added that she believes she already contributes more toward their dating expenses because she regularly rides in his car.

According to the original Pann post, Kim Won-hoon was the only panelist who sided with the girlfriend, while the other panelists supported the boyfriend. The poster added that online community reactions appeared to lean more toward the girlfriend’s position.

Netizen Reactions

The sampled comments leaned heavily toward the girlfriend’s side. Many users said the issue was not simply being asked to throw away a small piece of trash, but the boyfriend repeatedly linking the request to the fact that he drives her around.

1. I mean, maybe if they were married or had been together for a few years, but they’ve only been dating for three months, so asking her to throw away his trash is a bit...
2. Just reverse the situation. If the girlfriend drove the boyfriend around every day and asked him to throw away her trash, everyone here would be taking the girlfriend’s side again.
3. Seriously, why would you send your girlfriend home carrying your trash??? What kind of idiot goes through all the trouble of driving her home and then ends things like that ㅋㅋㅋㅋ If you feel like you need to make her carry your trash just so you can feel a little compensated, then stop driving her home or just break up.
4. Just ask her to help with gas money instead ㅋㅋㅋ Why make throwing away your trash a routine every single time?? Isn’t that really weird.... And the fact that the moment she asked why he keeps giving her trash, he immediately said, “I drive you around all the time,” makes it obvious that he’s doing it because he feels like she owes him something for the rides. It’s such a turn-off.
5. A lot of people are missing the point. Throwing away the trash itself isn’t the issue. People are saying, “Can’t she even throw away a little trash?” But if it’s that easy, couldn’t he just throw it away himself when he gets out? The problem is that he hands it to his girlfriend every single time because he feels like he deserves something in return, and that’s what’s so damn lame about it. She never asked him to drive her around. He kept saying he wanted to do it because he liked doing it, but once it started becoming tiring and annoying, this attitude of “I should at least make her take my trash” is so petty and pathetic. Of course she could throw something away if it couldn’t stay in the car or if it was trash she had made herself. But gathering up all kinds of everyday trash and making her take it every time she gets out is such a crappy mindset.
6. Once in a while, of course I’d throw something away for them. But gathering up all kinds of everyday trash and handing it to her every single time she gets out—is that normal..? Just ask for gas money instead. How can this mindset of “I drive you around every time, so at least throw away my trash” be framed as consideration.. ㅠㅠ
7. Once or twice every now and then is understandable, but asking every single time would be annoying and hard to understand.
8. If it were gas money, I’d happily contribute, but trash is a bit... I could do it once or twice, but if it happened every time, I’d hate it.
9. He’s sending his girlfriend home holding trash instead of flowers? Well, she’ll just go find a guy who gives her flowers instead.
10. What are these comments even saying? The woman should just buy a car??? Did she ever ask her boyfriend to drive her around? ㅋㅋㅋ He was the one who insisted on driving her even when she said it was fine, and now he’s suddenly asking her to throw away his trash? If he had asked her to chip in a little for gas, then sure—even if he volunteered to drive her, I could at least take the rides into consideration~ But trash? Why would you hand someone your trash? I wouldn’t even hand trash to a friend or family member on their way out ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
