Kopiko coffee candy is drawing praise on TheQoo as viewers compare its frequent appearances in K-dramas with earlier product placements backed by Chinese brands.
The viral post recalled several past controversies involving Chinese PPL in Korean dramas. It pointed to a Chinese self-heating bibimbap product labeled in Korean, as well as criticism surrounding Chinese food and sponsorship elements in SBS’s Joseon Exorcist. The post also referenced tvN’s True Beauty, which featured Chinese-language advertisements, instant hot pot products, and other Chinese brand placements.
According to the poster, Kopiko later became a much more common presence in K-dramas after Indonesian company Mayora Group began investing heavily in product placement. Unlike the earlier sponsorships criticized in the post, Kopiko’s appearances are described as largely limited to showing characters opening or eating the candy rather than influencing the drama’s storyline.
Netizen Reactions
The sampled comments were overwhelmingly positive and humorous toward Kopiko, with many users saying they had grown fond of seeing the candy repeatedly appear in dramas, although one commenter questioned why domestic brands were not being used instead.
